Noteworthy > VSB NEWS Tree Project Continuing: Hassell Memorial and Statewide Plantings The Senior Lawyers Conference is con- tinuing to solicit donations to pay for planting and maintaining a tree in honor of the late Chief Justice Leroy Rountree Hassell Sr. on the state Capitol grounds, and to continue the "Lawyers for a Green Virginia" project. Last year ( /valawyermagazine/vl0211_slc.pdf), "Lawyers for a Green Virginia" delivered more than 2,600 seedlings from the Department of Forestry to locations across the state. John H. Tate Jr., tree chair of the conference, said donations this year will once again be used to buy and deliver the seedlings. The Hassell tree on the Capitol grounds is intended to be a permanent memorial to the chief justice. The tree will cost $10,000 and will be chosen and planted by the Capitol Preservation Council. To receive free seedlings selected for your area of Virginia and to sponsor their planting in March, contact Stephanie Blanton, conference liaison, at (804) 775-0576 or, or John Tate at, (276) 783-7238, or 102 W. Main St., Suite A, Marion, VA 24354. Donations to either project can be sent to John M. Oakey Jr., vice chair of the conference, in care of McGuire Woods LLP, One James Center, 901 E. Cary St., Richmond, VA 23219-4030, payable to "Trees for Virginia" for either of the planting pro- jects. Please designate your contribution to "The Honor Tree Project" for the memorial tree.
