Professional Notices Melinda Douglas , who founded the Alexandria Offi ce of the Public Defender, retired from the position at the end of Douglas October after 32 years in the role. A strong advocate for indigent de-fendants, Douglas was the fi rst woman to be named chief defender of a Virginia public defender offi ce, the fi rst woman to receive the VSB’s Criminal Law sec-tion’s Harry L. Carrico Professionalism award in 2012, as well as the fi rst public defender to receive the honor. An ex-tensive instructor and lecturer, Douglas is an adjunct professor at American University College of Law. Distinguished Service, to Kathleen A. Dooley , City Attorney for the City of Fredericksburg, at its recently concluded annual fall conference in Williamsburg. The Finnegan Award recognizes Dooley for her signifi cant contributions to Virginia local government law and the LGA. Dooley has devoted over 30 years to local government law, serving as the city’s chief counsel since 2004 after working for the Town of Blacksburg and the City of Chesapeake. Dunlap Law PLC of Richmond, the fi rst Virginia or D.C. law fi rm to earn Certifi ed B Corp status, is pleased to announce the Dunlap launch of Bill Ten Give One, an innovative new program that grants pro-bono legal services to entrepreneurs from disadvantaged backgrounds. For every 10 hours Dunlap Law bills to its clients, it will give away one hour of legal counsel to a bootstrapping busi-ness owner nurtured by UnBoundRVA, a program that helps people from low-income backgrounds with opening their own businesses. Since 2014, the non-profi t has launched 12 Richmond-area businesses with the support of volunteers and community partners. Stephanie E. Grana of Breit Cantor Grana Buckner has received the VADA-VTLA Civility Award which is presented by the Grana Virginia Association of Defense Attorneys and the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association to a lawyer who acts with the “highest degree of civility and professionalism” toward litigation opponents. A personal injury lawyer, Grana also devotes herself to bolstering the Virginia legal community, serving on the VSB Council for the 14th circuit. Geoffrey M. Goodale has joined Duane Morris LLP as a partner in the fi rm’s Corporate practice group in Washington, D.C., enhanc-ing the fi rm’s international trade capabilities. Goodale assists U.S. and non-U.S. entities of all sizes and in many industries in achieving their international business objectives in cost-effective ways. His practice focuses on export controls, economic sanctions, import compliance, trade litigation, international intellectual property rights protection, foreign direct investment, cybersecurity, anti-corruption, and government contracting matters. (l–r): Cottone, Preston, Byrne, Millan, and Powell (l–r): Stanley and Ramseur The Virginia Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (VACDL), the state’s largest bar organization dedicated to criminal defense, presented the VACDL Champion of Justice Award to State Senator William M. Stanley Jr. of Franklin County. The award is presented to a Virginian who has proven to be a champion for a fairer criminal justice system in the Commonwealth. The VACDL presented Douglas Ramseur , a former VACDL president, with the B. Leigh Drewry, Jr. Defender of Justice Award. The Drewry Award was es-tablished in 2018, to honor a past or present member of VACDL who has signifi cantly contributed to the organi-zation and the criminal defense bar of Virginia. The Local Government Attorneys of Virginia , Inc. (LGA), awarded its highest honor, the Edward J. Finnegan Award for www.vsb.org Attorneys Sean Byrne, Davis Powell, Tony Cottone, Phylicia Preston and Roxanne Millan have joined together to form a new fi rm, Byrne Legal Group . Located in downtown Richmond, the fi rm will focus on medical malpractice litigation defense for health care professionals and facilities across Virginia. The trial at-torneys at the fi rm also handle complex business and criminal investigation and lawsuits. The Harrisonburg-Rockingham Bar Association has been recog-nized as having one of the best pro bono programs in Culbreth the country, earning state-wide and national acclaim for the level of support they give the pro bono program at Blue Ridge Legal Services.
