VSB NEWS < Noteworthy The Honorable Teresa M. Chafi n Elevated to the Supreme Court of Virginia The investiture of the Honorable Teresa M. Chafi n as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Virginia was held September 6, 2019, in a special session of the Court held at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center. Justice Chafi n, a native of Lebanon, was elected by the General Assembly to a 12-year term, and will fi ll the seat left by retiring Justice Elizabeth A. McClanahan. Justice Chafi n was elected to the Twenty-ninth District Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court in 2002, where she served as Chief Judge until 2005, when she was elected a judge of the Twenty -ninth Judicial Circuit, serv-ing as Chief Judge in 2008 and 2009. In 2012, Justice Chafi n was elected a judge of the Court of Appeals of Virginia. Prior to her service in the judiciary, Justice Chafi n was an attorney in private practice in Lebanon, Virginia. Justice Chafi n received her under-graduate degree from Emory and Henry College and her law degree from the University of Richmond School of Law. Virginia Law Foundation Announces 2019 Grant Recipients The Virginia Law Foundation (VLF), the philanthropic arm of Virginia CLE, held its annual 2019 Grant Recipient Luncheon in Richmond in August where over $538,000 was awarded to a variety of organizations. The VLF has provided more than $26 million in grants over the last 30 years to projects throughout the Commonwealth that support the VLF mission, which is to promote the rule of law, access to justice, and law-related education. Grant recipients included the Virginia Beach Justice Initiative, the Oliver White Hill Foundation, and the Capital Area Immigrants’ Rights Coalition, among many others.
